FAQ

Please contact us if you cannot find an answer to your question

Are you fully licensed by the CAA?

Yes - Fly and Dive Drone Services have the CAA's (Civil Aviation Authority) Permission for Commercial Operations (PfCO). This is required by all drone operators intending to use aerial drones for commercial purposes.

Do you need a license for the aquatic drone?

No - Unlike aerial drones, a licence isn't required to operate aquatic drones for commercial operations. We have however received the necessary training on how to use the drones safely and effectively.

Are you insured?

We are covered by a trusted insurer against injury and damage for each flight with £1,000,000 public liability up to 121m (400ft).

How do you protect the privacy of others?

We are registered with the Information Commissioner's Office - notification number and comply with data protection requirements. Please follow the link https://ico.org.uk/ for further information. Please also see our privacy notice.

What drones do you use?

The drone that we use for aerial operations is the Mavic 2 Zoom by DJI. For aquatic operations, we use both PowerDolphin and PowerRay by PowerVision. Please follow the links below to see the drones that we use.

How high can you fly?

We have a maximum height limit of 121m (400ft) from the ground.

How far can the drones travel?

Aerial operations can be carried out to a max range of 500m horizontally however, visual line of site must be maintained at all times so it depends on visibility. The PowerRay drone is limited to 70m by its cable. The PowerDolphin is completely wireless and has an impressive maximum range of 800m!

How deep can you dive too?

The PowerDolphin doesn't have the ability to completely dive unlike the PowerRay. It can however capture under water footage to an angle of 220 degrees with its dual-joint 4K camera. The PowerRay can dive to a maximum depth of 98ft and has a built in 4K HD Camera.

How long can you fly for?

The maximum flight time on a single battery in normal conditions is up to 30 minutes. On average we fly up to 25 minutes before landing and changing the battery. We do have spare pre-charged batteries ready to use and are able to charge as we go.

How long can you sail/dive for?

The PowerRay has a 4 hour operating time whereas the PowerDolphin has a 2 hour operating time.

Why do you need both aquatic drones?

Having both enables us to capture footage and data from the surface of the water to a maximum depth of 98ft. This provides us with the ideal equipment to complete jobs such as vessel, pier and aquaculture inspections. The PowerDolphin also has the ability to scan and generate an underwater topographic map, ideal for commercial fishery managers/anglers.

What if I require both aerial and aquatic drones?

No problem at all. We can fix a quote for you that involves using both drones. We will prioritise obtaining the aerial footage/data first if we are able to take advantage of better weather conditions.

What are unsuitable weather conditions for aerial operations?

Wind speeds and gusts of 24mph or above, any form of precipitation (rain, snow, ice) and thunderstorms. We do closely monitor the weather forecast 48 hours prior to operations and if we feel it needs to be postponed, we will get in touch and reschedule for another date that suits you. On the day, we will check before the flight that conditions are safe and within our limits to fly.

What are unsuitable weather conditions for aquatic operations?

Thunderstorms and below freezing temperatures. The same applies with aquatic operations, we will closely monitor the weather forecast 48 hours prior to operations and if we feel it needs to be postponed, we will get in touch and reschedule for another date that suits you.

Can I be present during flight/dive operations?

If you wish to be present during the operation that's not a problem. You will be briefed before the operation begins, on safety procedures and operation plan.

How close can you come to people and buildings?

The drone must be flown at least 50m away from any persons not under our control. The drone must not be flown within 50m of any built up area or within 150m of a gathering or event of more than 1000 people.

What are your prices for your services?

Please see our standard base price list. Our prices may vary depending on the complexity of the task, time required and associated risks. Please call or email us to discuss your plans and requirements.

Can you fly at night?

We can fly at night if this is required as we have night rating from the CAA.

Can you dive at night?

We do not carry out aquatic operations at night as yet. However, it is something that maybe made possible in the future.

I am interested in purchasing my own Aerial/Aquatic drone, can you help me with this?

Yes we can. Please get in touch with us and we will be happy to help.

Do Fly and Dive Drone Services work outside the UK?
